Mother Was a Gunner’s Mate: WWII in the WAVES by Josette Dermody Wingo

I enjoyed this, but probably because my grandmother was a WAVE and I really wanted to get a look into the mindset of these girls in a world at war.  They were so much funnier, innocent yet wordly, so much more than history books and Rosie the Riveter posters indicate.

Had some slow spots, narratively speakling, but it’s nonfic, so you kind of expect it.

The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks

This was…odd.  I bet it would make a great action movie, if you could find a way to communicate all the subtext.   That said, I enjoyed the heck out of it and can’t wait for the sequel.

Pirates! by Celia Rees

Filed under: ChickLit, YA — Dynila @ 2:03 pm

What girl hasn’t wanted to be a pirate and run off to sea?  This book is a bit heavier than the title and the fact that it is YA would make one think–Our heroine is running from an arranged marriage and the consequences of killing the overseer trying to rape her maid/slave/illegitimate sister (yea, it’s a spolier, but not much of one).  I like the hint of hope at the end, but there’s a fair bit of darkness as well.

Tomb of the Golden Bird by Elizabeth Peters

(An Amelia Peabody mystery)

This series is winding down. As much as I love the characters, they are all getting older and their adventures become less and less plausible both as they age and as the timeframe for the stories gets closer and closer to the modern day.

I did enjoy the not-quite-insider perspective on the discovery and opening of an intact royal tomb. Oh, shoot… That may be a spoiler. But then again, probably not, if you’ve followed the series.
