This was far better than I expected it to be when my dad recommended it.

The cover art and jacket blurb led me to expect some sort of bizarre redneck fantasy, but this was a really good book. It delves deep into the politics of the age they fall into, far more comprehensively than I expected. My only issue with it was the natives’ ready acceptance of modern dress and moral/social mores.

If you loved Scarpetta in the early books, stop with Black Notice. Everything since has been a disappointment. Ridiculously unlikely and overly convoluted plots and waaay too much spent in everyone’s overly angsty heads. The emotion levels in the last few Scarpettas, and particularly this one, read like the stage directions of a particularly melodramatic teen soap… I may keep reading them, til they get to the point where I quit one completely, but I’ll only read library copies as they are no longer good enough to take a chunk of my book budget.

(yea, I know, but adverbs were on sale this week… lol)
